The RRDFPA is pleased to announce the Award Winners for the 2023 Festival.

PLEASE NOTE:

  • ONLY AMATEURS ARE ELIGIBLE FOR AWARDS.
  • IN ORDER FOR AN INDIVIDUAL TO RECEIVE AN AWARD, HE OR SHE MUST COMPETE IN AT LEAST TWO CLASSES.
  • ALL AWARDS (except the Muriel and Gordon Ross Scholarship and Festival Bursaries) ARE DECIDED BY THE ADJUDICATORS.

VOCAL ROSE BOWL

Awarded to the most outstanding individual performer in vocal competition who has competed in the following compulsory classes at his or her current level of study:

(a) Quick Study
(b) Sight Reading/Skills Test
(c) Three selections from Classes PV1201 to PV1222, PV1251 to PV1272, or PV1301to PV1322 at least one of which must be in a language other than English. Selections must be at a Grade 8 level or higher. Only participants studying at a Grade 8 level or above are eligible and a contestant may win this award only once.

  • Joan Miller Award‚ Sponsored by her children in recognition of her support for and dedication to the Festival – for the best stage presence in Poetry or Prose performance – Grade 4 and under
  • Bertha Livingstone Award – spoken poetry‚ Grade 5

DRAMA ROSE BOWL

Awarded to the most outstanding individual performer who has competed in the following compulsory classes in English:

(a) Impromptu Speech
(b) One Prose Reading – Humorous or Serious*
(c) One Solo Poetry selection – Humorous or Serious*
*If (b) is Humorous, then (c) must be Serious and vice versa.
(d) One of‚ Skits‚ Excerpts from Plays, or‚ Monologues‚ – Role in a play or skit must be major
(e) One other class.

Only performers in Grade 9 through Adult (Open) classes are eligible and any individual may win the award only once.

PIANO ROSE BOWL

Awarded to the most outstanding individual performer in Piano competition who has demonstrated an advanced level of excellence and superior musicianship and has met the following compulsory requirements:

(a) Three Piano Solo selections at his or her current level of study in the 2400 or 2500 series of classes
(b) Quick Study
(c) Sight Reading Only participants competing at Grade 8 level and above are eligible and a contestant may win this award only once.

INSTRUMENTAL AWARDS

  • Harper Simmons Award – best Brass solo performer
  • Fort Frances Rotary Club Award – best Woodwind solo performer
  • Loyal Orange Lodge #990 Award – best String (including guitar) solo performer
  • Helen Parris Memorial Award‚ Outstanding Musicality for Strings (including guitar)‚ Solo or Ensemble – not necessarily based on marks
  • Gillies Instrumental Award – group of 2 to 8‚ any of Brass, Woodwind, or String
  • Recorder Award – best recorder, solo or group – Adjudicator‚ Choice – $25.00 award for the purchase of recorder music plus a year‚ subscription to‚ American Recorder Society‚
  • The Ralph Whetstone Band Trophy – best band

INSTRUMENTAL ROSE BOWL

To be awarded to the most outstanding individual performer in instrumental (other than piano) competition who has competed in the following compulsory classes and who has done so on only one instrument:

(a) Test Piece
(b) Quick Study
(c) Sight Reading
(d) Two other classes (may include Duet or Ensemble but may not include Band or Orchestra classes)

Only participants competing at Grade 6 level classes of examination courses (or equivalent) are eligible and a contestant may win this award only once unless he or she competes on a different instrument.

OTHER FESTIVAL AWARDS

Note: Contestants interested in the Festival Arts Bursaries or the Muriel and Gordon Ross Scholarship must send in an application form to Festival Committee: Box 806 Fort Frances, ON P9A 3N1

by March 31, 2023.

Muriel and Gordon Ross Memorial Scholarship – $200.00 for an outstanding music or drama student, secondary level. This award alternates among Vocal, Instrumental, Drama and Piano Divisions. This scholarship MUST BE APPLIED FOR IN WRITING to the Festival Committee using the Bursary/Scholarship Application Form. Applicants must describe in 500 to 1000 words why they enjoy music or drama. We encourage the applicant to express their love of music or drama in their application.

The 2023 Muriel and Gordon Ross Scholarship will be awarded to an entrant in the DRAMA Division of the Festival.

GARTON Music Award‚ This award alternates among Vocal, Piano and Instrumental Divisions. The 2023 Garton Music Award will be presented to an entrant in the INSTRUMENTAL Division of the Festival.

Highlights Concert Awards

For Festival entrants other than Award winners who have been selected by the Adjudicators for performance at the Festival Highlights Concert. These awards are sponsored by the Festival Committee.

Festival Arts Bursaries

Three (3) scholarships valued at $150.00 each to be awarded to one deserving student in each of the divisions not already covered by the Muriel and Gordon Ross Memorial Scholarship. In 2023 there will be bursaries available for students in the Piano, Vocal, and Instrumental Divisions. Competitors 12 years of age and older may apply for these awards each time they participate in the Festival. First-time applicants will be given preference when these bursaries are awarded. Those interested MUST FILL OUT AN APPLICATION FORM AND SUBMIT IT TO THE FESTIVAL COMMITTEE to be considered for these bursaries.  Applicants must describe in 500 to 1000 words why they enjoy music and/or drama. We encourage the applicant to express their love of music and/or drama in their application.

Provincial Finals

Competitors from senior levels of piano and vocal classes may be recommended by the adjudicator to compete in the Provincial Finals should a high enough standard be obtained
